Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations in the Doctoral Program Clinical Pharmacy

The Doctoral Program Clinical Pharmacy is guided by the highest scientific standards, but also contributes significantly to the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs, https://sdgs.un.org/goals) of the United Nations. Through our research and close collaboration with other professional groups and healthcare institutions, we promote sustainable, equitable and health-promoting approaches in the medicines supply of patients.

SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being

SDG 3 is at the center of clinical pharmaceutical research. Our research aims to optimize pharmacotherapy for individual patients, make drug therapies safer and more effective and minimize adverse drug reactions. Our research projects focus on patient-relevant outcomes. In this way, we contribute to the development of high-quality, patient-centered healthcare.

SDG 4: Quality Education

Education and knowledge transfer are key components of our program. As part of the structured doctoral program accredited by the LMU Faculty of Medicine, we promote young scientists in the field of clinical pharmacy and contribute to SDG 4. The program includes scientific and statistical advice, the promotion of scientific soft skills and clinical skills with relevance to practice. The aim of the program is to impart the fundamentals with which patient care can be sustainably improved and innovative solutions developed.

SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

In line with SDG 9, the Clinical Pharmacy doctoral program promotes the development and implementation of innovative tools and care approaches in drug therapy. In this way, we contribute to the creation and modernization of healthcare infrastructures.

SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities

Clinical pharmacy research also supports SDG 10 by focusing on vulnerable patient groups that are often excluded from clinical trials and for whose care there is little evidence. The focus is on older people, people with impaired organ function and people with chronic diseases. In this way, we are working towards a more equitable healthcare system in which all people have access to safe and effective drug therapy, regardless of their social or health situation. The Doctoral Program Clinical Pharmacy is supported by the Foundation Patient & Clinical Pharmacy, which ensures that all doctoral students have the opportunity to carry out their doctoral projects regardless of their social situation.

SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

Our program promotes the sustainable use of medicines and thus supports SDG 12. A central component of our research projects is rational and evidence-based drug therapy and the promotion of patient adherence when taking medicines. As a result, the unnecessary disposal of unused medicines and the consumption of resources can also be reduced, which has a positive impact on the ecological footprint of healthcare. In addition, we contribute to the responsible use of medicines by training and informing the professional public.

SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals

By its very nature, clinical pharmacy is a discipline that works closely with other healthcare professions and academic institutions on an interdisciplinary basis. Through these collaborations, we support SDG 17: Only an interdisciplinary team can provide sustainable, effective, safe and patient-centered drug therapy.

Summary

The Doctoral Program Clinical Pharmacy contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals in many ways. From the promotion of health and well-being to high-quality education, the creation of innovative concepts and the reduction of inequalities, our research and education are guided by the idea of making the healthcare of the future sustainable and equitable.
